How to Choose the Right Website Design Company in South Africa

Choosing who builds your website is a bigger decision than it looks. You are not only buying a design. You are choosing who will host it, fix it when something goes wrong and answer when you need a change.

Prices, packages and promises vary widely, and they are not always easy to compare. This guide gives you a simple way to cut through the noise.

Start with what you need

Before you speak to anyone, write down a few basics. It makes every conversation shorter and every quote easier to compare.

  • What should the website do? Get calls and WhatsApp messages, show your services, take bookings, sell products?
  • Roughly how many pages do you need? A simple business site is often just a handful.
  • How do you want customers to contact you?
  • When do you need it live?
  • What is your budget, both upfront and per month?

An online shop with hundreds of products is a very different project from a five-page business site, and should be priced and planned differently.

Questions to ask before you pay

1. What exactly is included?

Ask for a list. Design, hosting, maintenance, support, mobile design, contact buttons, basic search setup: which are in the price, and which cost extra?

2. What will I pay in total over 12 and 24 months?

A low build price with high monthly fees can cost more than it first appears. Our article on what a professional website costs in South Africa shows how to compare once-off and monthly pricing.

3. Who hosts the website and who looks after it afterwards?

A website needs hosting, security updates and occasional fixes. Make sure someone is responsible, and find out how you reach them. See Website Hosting Explained for what to look for.

4. How long will it take, and what do you need from me?

Delays often happen because the designer is waiting for content. A good provider tells you what they need and how long it takes once they have it.

5. Who owns what?

Ask who owns your content, your design and your domain name, and what happens to each if you leave. There is no single right answer, but it should be written down and clear. As an example, our Terms of Service say that content you provide remains yours, while we retain ownership of our proprietary templates, software and design assets.

6. What happens if I want to cancel?

Look for the cancellation terms in writing. Can you cancel at any time? Does billing stop straight away? Are past payments refundable? Ours are in our Terms of Service: you may cancel at any time, and cancelling stops future billing but does not automatically entitle you to a refund for previous payments.

7. Will it work properly on a phone?

Do not take this for granted. Open the provider's own website and any examples they show on your phone. See Why Mobile-Friendly Websites Are Essential for Modern Businesses for what to look for.

8. What are you promising about Google?

Nobody outside Google controls search results. Any provider who guarantees you a first-page or number-one ranking is promising something they cannot deliver. Sensible on-page setup helps search engines understand your site, but results depend on many things, including your competition.

Check their own website first

A web design company's own site is its shop window. Does it load quickly? Does it read well on your phone? Is the pricing clear? Are the contact details easy to find, and are there proper terms and a privacy policy? If a provider cannot get their own website right, that says something.

Ask to see real websites they have built, and where possible speak to a customer. Be wary of portfolios made up entirely of concept designs or mock-ups that are presented as real client work.

Red flags to watch for

  • Guaranteed rankings, traffic or sales.
  • Vague pricing or a reluctance to say what is included.
  • No terms and conditions, or terms you are not shown until after you have paid.
  • Pressure to decide immediately.
  • No easy way to reach them, such as a phone number, email or WhatsApp.
  • Testimonials or "client results" that cannot be checked.

Comparing the main types of provider

DIY website builders give you the most control and the lowest cost on paper, but you carry all the work and the responsibility. Freelancers can offer good value and personal service, though it pays to check how they handle changes and problems. Agencies often provide a fuller service and a bigger team at a higher price. Website subscription studios like ours bundle design, hosting, maintenance and support into a monthly fee, so you avoid a large upfront cost and technical upkeep.
